Summer reading initiative is tied to chances to win scholarships
Tennesseans for Student Success on Tuesday kicked off their third annual summer reading initiative, Tristar Reads.
The college scholarship opportunity encourages students to spend at least twenty minutes a day imagining their adventure in a book.
“Tristar Reads is a fun and rewarding way to encourage reading during the summer months,” said Tennesseans for Student Success President and CEO Adam Lister. “We’re inviting all Tennessee students – from Kindergarten to 12th grade – to read with us this summer. As they read and log their reading time at, they will be entered to win one of our three $1,000 college scholarships.”
Lister continued: “When we meet with educators across the state, we hear about a key component missing in students’ summers: daily reading. Three years ago, we launched Tristar Reads to encourage students to spend twenty minutes a day reading and help stop the summer literacy slide. The lack of continued reading can cause a drop in proficiency. As our students excitedly head to the next grade, we wanted to make sure they were ready for success on day one.”
Tristar Reads runs from May 1 – September 7 and is open to all Tennessee students. Visit for rules of entry, suggested reading lists, and more information.
