Republican Tennessee Governor candidate Randy Boyd visited the Cool Cafe in Franklin Tuesday to meet and talk with members of the community.

Boyd is the founder of Radio Systems Corporation, has previously served as the Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commissioner, and is a big proponent of higher education.

“We have to make sure education leads to a job, and if you talk to companies all across our state, the biggest challenge they have is finding skilled workers,” Boyd said. “If you look at the root cause of crime, it’s usually because you don’t have an education to get a good job. So getting people the skills they need to get a great job… it’s the inflection point of everything.”

One initiative Boyd discussed is partnering with the Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology and local community colleges to set up satellite campuses at high schools.

“Kids can actually graduate from high school not just with a high school diploma, but with a certificate and a job-ready skill,” Boyd said. “We do that, the economy’s going to grow, it’s going to reduce crime, it’s going to improve health outcomes.”

Boyd founded Radio Systems Corporation, a parent company of PetSafe, all the way back in 1991. The company is headquartered in his home of Knoxville. Boyd said he believes his business experience can build results in the political sphere.

“I’ve had to hit the ground running, because I’m the only candidate that’s had the executive branch experience,” Boyd said. “I helped pave the Drive to 55 as special adviser, I was Commissioner of Economic and Community Development for two years, I recruited 50 thousand jobs – so I know first hand that my business background can build a result. And I’ve proven it.”

Candidates in the Republican primary race for Tennessee governor are Bill Lee, Randy Boyd, Diane Black and Beth Harwell. Election day is Thursday, August 2.
